The medieval period hill fort was built by the Nayakas with additions made during Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan's reign in the 18th century. It passed on to the British after the death of Tipu Sultan in 1799.

The signage was conceived to cover all aspects of one of India's strongest hill forts, right from its defence and water harvesting systems, vernacular mud architecture, religious structures and its most famous resident - the feisty Onake Obavva!

The pedestals for the panels are made of granite, a locally available material.
